North Korea's nuclear program had been developed as a response to Washington's "hostile policy," "nuclear threats" and "stifling strategy" against the DPRK, claimed North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong in his UN address.

MOSCOW, September 28 (RIA Novosti) – North Korea's nuclear program had been developed as a response to Washington's "hostile policy,"  "nuclear threats" and "stifling strategy" against the DPRK, claimed North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong in his UN address.

"The nuclear deterrent of the DPRK is not intended to threaten or attack others, neither is it a bargaining chip to be exchanged for something else. The nuclear issue will be resolved if and when the threat to our sovereignty and right to life is removed in substance with the termination of the US hostile policy," Ri Su Yong said, as cited by the Wall Street Journal.

According to North Korea's Foreign Minister, a peaceful resolution of the confrontation between the DPRK and its southern neighbor is an issue of primary importance.

"Peaceful environment and reduction of tensions are ever more precious to us now than at any time. The tense situation of the Korean peninsula does not help us. On the contrary, it presents a serious obstacle in our efforts for economic development and to improve people's living standards," he underscored in his speech at the UN General Assembly.

Mr. Ri slammed Seoul for large-scale military exercises which have been carried out annually by South Korea and the US, stressing that such actions could bring the peninsular on the brink of war.

Attacking Washington for its "hostile" policy towards North Korea, Ri Su Yong explained that the DPRK's nuclear program was an "inevitable" response to the US' deterrence and "stifling strategy" against the communist state.

North Korea's Foreign Minister also expressed his discontent with the UN Security Council's work, calling it "a forum of lies and double standards," Agence France-Presse reports.

"The Security Council should no longer serve as a forum for telling lies," he told the UN General Assembly, as quoted by the media outlet.

Ri Su Yong emphasized that the Council was "showcasing the extreme manifestation of the double standards," turning a deaf ear to a public plea to stop the bloodshed in Gaza and allowing the United States and its allies to bomb Syria. According to Mr. Ri, Washington has no right to attack the sovereign state of Syria "under the disguise of counter-terrorism."

It should be noted that Pyongyang's address to the United Nations was delivered the first time in the last 15 years.
