MOSCOW, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - Over 40,000 people have had to flee their homes in high-risk areas as Typhoon Bopha smashed into the southern Philippines, Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.

The authorities suspended aviation and shipping services in the area. According to the state weather service, Bopha made landfall on the east coast of 10-million Mindanao Island early on Tuesday. The typhoon brought gusts of up to 210 kilometers per hour (130 mph) and heavy rain.

No one was immediately reported killed or injured, and no serious damage was reported.

The civil defense office said 80 flights were grounded and thousands of ferry passengers were stranded at ports. Over 41,000 people had moved into some 1,000 government shelters across the island by early Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera.
