The European Court of Human Rights has forbidden Russia to extradite an Uzbek national to his homeland where he is wanted on extremist charges.
Sadirbek Umirov, member of the Warriors of Islam group which is considered extremist by the Uzbek authorities, was arrested in Russia in May 2010.
He was released from custody in November 2011 and granted temporary asylum by the Russian authorities this summer.
The Strasbourg court ruled that if extradited to Uzbekistan, Umirov might be exposed to the risk of ill-treatment.
Russia can appeal the ruling.
