U.S. President Barack Obama told TV stations in an interview on Tuesday that his country has achieved "a big chunk" of its strategic objectives in Afghanistan.

"By us killing Osama bin Laden, getting al Qaeda back on its heels, stabilizing much of the country in Afghanistan so that the Taliban can't take it over," Obama said, "it's now time for us to recognize that we've accomplished a big chunk of our mission and that it's time for Afghans to take more responsibility."

The United States is set to start transferring its more than 100,000 troops out of Afghanistan in July after an almost decade-long war.
