Russian-European integration depends on future generations - Putin

MOSCOW, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin told members of the Dutch media Monday that Russia is a very promising partner for Europe and that it and Europe should cooperate closely, but "what forms this integration takes will depend on future generations."

When asked whether Russia would be interested in joining the European Union, Putin said, "If you invite us, we'll think about it. Thank you very much, I'm glad to hear this question.... I would be happy if this happened."

However, the president said it would be inappropriate for Russia to approach the EU with such a request.

Putin noted that Norway, a rich and self-sufficient country is not a member of the EU, while eastern European countries are trying at all costs to enter the EU, "because they think that this will improve their economies and increase the quality of life for their people."

However, these goals are reached largely "by donor help from the old EU members," he said.
