A Baltimore police officer was injured while arresting a demonstrator amid protests during the first court hearing for six officers charged in the death of resident Freddie Gray, Baltimore Police Commissioner Office stated in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, about 75 protestors gathered at the Baltimore Courthouse as legal hearings began in the case of the 25-year-old African-American Freddie Gray, who died of spinal cord injuries on April 19 that he sustained in police custody.

Six police officers have been charged for Gray’s illegal arrest and subsequent death.

"One officer sustained minor injuries this morning while assisting with the arrest," the statement read on Wednesday. "His injuries did not require hospitalization."

Baltimore police said officers arrested one person for blocking a road, but underscored that most protesters are cooperating and not standing on roadways. "The overwhelming majority [of protestors] are peaceful and law-abiding," the statement said.
