MOSCOW, November 24 (R-Sport) – Visitors Sibir Novosibirsk needed only one goal to hand Metallurg Novokuznetsk its third consecutive KHL defeat on Saturday.

Sibir leapfrogged the 2011 champion Salavat Yulaev Ufa to claim the fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 46 points, while Novokuznetsk remained in seventh. Traktor Chelyabinsk leads the conference with 56 points.

The only goal of the game came in the fifth minute, when Artyom Voroshilo fed Anton Malyshev from the point and the former Avangard Omsk forward outplayed Alexander Lazushin in Novokuznetsk’s goal.

Canadian goaltender Jeff Glass blocked 36 shots for his second shutout of the season.

On Friday, the Western Conference leader Dynamo Moscow beat Severstal Cherepovets 5-3 at home to record the third consecutive victory.

Severstal gave the Gagarin Cup holder a major scare in the beginning of the second period as defensemen Alexander Ryazantsev, Bogdan Kiselevich and Teemu Laakso made the score 3-0.

Dmitry Pestunov scored a minute after Laakso’s goal to initiate Dynamo’s comeback and Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin netted another in the 29th minute.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov, making the first appearance for Dynamo this season since returning to his old team from North America, recorded an assist on Ovechkin’s goal before setting up a Filip Novak equalizer at 33:23.

Ovechkin scored his ninth goal for Dynamo late in the second period before his Capitals teammate Niklas Backstrom sealed the win in the third after providing three assists earlier.

Dynamo leads second-placed Lokomotiv Yaroslavl by three points, while Severstal is seventh with two consecutive defeats.

Lokomotiv, meanwhile, suffered its first defeat in 10 games in Prague at the hands of the local team Lev, which posted a 7-3 victory.

Former Avangard Omsk forward and last postseason’s top scorer Roman Cervenka scored his first goal since joining Lev earlier this month.

Lev is just inside the playoffs zone in eight with two consecutive wins.

Elsewhere, Ilya Kovalchuk’s SKA St. Petersburg beat Dynamo Minsk 3-2 in overtime at home, with St. Louis Blues wing Vladimir Tarasenko breaking the deadlock in the second period and Yuri Alexandrov scoring the winner at 63:53.

SKA is third in the West and the team from Belarus is 10th.

Other games Friday saw CSKA Moscow beat visiting Torpedo Nizhniy Novgorod 3-2 on penalty shots and Spartak Moscow prevailing over Ak Bars Kazan 3-2 in overtime on the road.

Dinamo Riga goaltender Mikael Tellqvist stopped 47 shots to post his first shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on the road, while Slovan Bratislava edged out Atlant Moscow Region 3-2 at home.
