Germany’s DTM touring car series confirmed Tuesday that next year will see a race in Russia for the first time, to be hosted at the newly opened Moscow Raceway.

Germany’s DTM touring car series confirmed Tuesday that next year will see a race in Russia for the first time, to be hosted at the newly opened Moscow Raceway.

The decision to add a Moscow race to the calendar on August 4 was motivated by the desire of DTM’s three constructors to sell their road cars to the growing Russian market, according to the head of ITR, which holds the commercial rights to the series.

“The move to Moscow is an important building block for DTM to open up new markets,” Hans Werner Aufrecht said in a website statement.

“The opening-up of a country like Russia is a big opportunity for the series and for our manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz to present themselves to a new audience internationally.”

DTM already visits Britain, Austria, Spain and the Netherlands, and Moscow will be the seventh stop on next year's 11-round tour.

The Moscow Raceway opened in July and has since hosted rounds of the Renault World Series, Superbike world championship and FIA GT1 world championship, but has yet to attract a sell-out crowd.

Last month, a spokesperson for the track told R-Sport that DTM and the World Touring Car Championship were both in talks to host races at the Moscow Raceway next year, and that MotoGP motorbike racing could follow.

Formula One track designer Hermann Tilke laid out the mix of long straights and slow sweeping turns, which have been criticized as boring by a host of drivers, including four-time F1 champion Alain Prost and Russian F1 driver Vitaly Petrov.

In response to the criticism, track manager Ekaterina Beltsevich has said some modifications are being considered to change the slow corners.
