World No. 85 Flavio Cipolla of Italy completed a straight-sets win over Russian wild card Teymuraz Gabashvili in the first round of the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday.

Cipolla, 28, converted three of his seven break points to grab a 6-4, 6-4 victory, advancing to the second round in Moscow for the first time.

There, the Italian will face Brazil’s No. 1 Thomaz Bellucci, who got a first-round bye due to his fourth seeding.

Elsewhere, Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic dumped out sixth seed Denis Istomin, who became the second seeded player to fall in the men’s draw after three-time champion Nikolay Davydenko was knocked out by Alex Bogomolov.

Earlier, Ivo Karlovic defeated Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-4, 7-6(4), while tournament newcomer Jerzy Janowicz beat world No. 80 Benjamin Becker of Germany 7-6(6), 6-3.

The Polish 22-year-old will play seventh seed Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in the second round.

At the start of play, Japanese eighth seed Ito Tatsuma dispatched qualifier Konstantin Kravchuk of Russia 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-3.
