Caterham driver Vitaly Petrov insists he is "not disappointed" with 22nd place on the grid for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

Only HRT's Narain Karthikeyan clocked a slower time than the Russian in qualifying at the Suzuka circuit on Saturday..

Due to a 10-place grid penalty imposed on Michael Schumacher for colliding with Jean-Eric Vergne in Singapore, Petrov will start in 22nd place rather than 23rd, but that's still his worst result of the season.

“On my second run I was at least 0.7 second up on my previous quickest lap, but I made a mistake in turn 14 and that cost me a lot of time,” Petrov was quoted by the Caterham website as saying.

“Despite that, I'm not disappointed with where I finished.”

The 28 year old stressed that the speed of his teammate Heikki Kovalainen, who will start 18th, shows that Caterham is better prepared than his direct rivals.

“Heikki's lap shows that we have a gap of around 0.6 second to the cars behind,” Petrov said.

“With good strategy and careful use of the tyres I think we can have a decent Sunday.”

Red Bull’s driver Sebastian Vettel took pole position, with his teammate Mark Webber joining him on the front row.
