U.S. Open champion Andy Murray battled past Stanislas Wawrinka and into the semifinals of the Japan Open on Friday.

Murray, the defending champion in Tokyo, downed his Swiss opponent 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in a match that turned out to be a far grittier affair than the first set had suggested.

After surviving his first dropped set of the week, Murray goes on to face Canada's Milos Raonic in the semifinals.

Raonic earlier saved a match point to defeat Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in a hard-fought 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory.

In the other quarterfinals, second seed Tomas Berdych plays local favorite Kei Nishikori, while Russia's Dmitry Tursunov faces Marcos Baghdatis.

The hard court tournament has a prize fund of $1,280,565.
