Ottawa Senators forward Kaspars Daugavins has signed a lockout contract with his hometown team Dinamo Riga in the KHL.

Ottawa Senators forward Kaspars Daugavins has signed a lockout contract with his hometown team Dinamo Riga in the KHL.

Daugavins, 24, signed a one-year agreement with the Senators this summer after completing his first full NHL season last year, making 66 appearances and notching up 11 points.

The left wing said that he would have no problems adapting to a new team as he is accustomed to Dinamo’s Latvian players in the national team.

“I have trained all summer with Dinamo. I’ve known most of the Latvian guys for several years from the national team and youth hockey,” Daugavins said on the team’s website “The atmosphere in the team is good. All team members get along great. Local or foreigner – doesn’t matter.”

Daugavins could make his debut at Atlant Moscow Region on Friday.

The deadline for averting a lockout passed Saturday after the NHL and the players’ association failed to agree terms on a new collective contract.

According to KHL regulations, contracts with incoming NHL players must include a get-out clause in case the lockout is resolved.
