In the KHL’s first Moscow derby of the season, Spartak scraped a 1-0 victory over big-spending CSKA.
The only goal of Wednesday’s game was scored early in the second period as Spartak forward Stanislav Zhmakin broke through to the goal crease from behind the net and scored on the rebound with a wrist shot.
Spartak goaltender Sergei Borisov made the third shutout of his KHL career, saving 35 shots from CSKA players including three-time KHL MVP Alexander Radulov.
Both teams performed poorly last season, with CSKA busting out of the first playoff round and Spartak failing to reach the playoffs.
Earlier, Amur Khabarovsk beat Atlant Moscow Region 3-1, with Dmitry Tarasov, Evgeny Korotkov and Oleg Piganovich scoring for Amur, while Nikolai Lemtyugov struck for Atlant.
