A new record has been set in the number of people using Facebook in one day.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A new record has been set in the number of people using Facebook in one day, the social network’s cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced.

"We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day," Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook profile on Thursday, specifying that the record was set on Monday (August 25), when "1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook."

Facebook’s CEO stressed that the milestone is highly important and marks the beginning of a path toward connecting the entire world.

"I'm so proud of our community for the progress we've made. Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world," Zuckerberg wrote.

Zuckerberg launched Facebook together with his Harvard University roommates in 2004. In 2007, he became a billionaire as a result of the success of Facebook. Zuckerberg was 23 at that time.

In October 2012, the number of Facebook users reached one billion.
