MOSCOW (Sputnik) –About 3,000 people were evacuated from the Moscow Domodedovo International Airport on Thursday morning, amid smoke resulting from a fire, an emergencies source told RIA Novosti.

Around 40 flights are delayed at Moscow's international Domodedovo Airport due to a fire that erupted in its premises early Thursday, according to flight information posted on the airport's website.

“About 3,000 people have been evacuated from the airport building,” the source said on Thursday.

The fire, which erupted in the baggage sector and covered an area of about 15 square meters (about 160 square feet), has been put out.

According to preliminary information, the fire erupted during construction work underway at the airport.

An emergencies source told RIA Novosti that once all the smoke from the fire is cleared, the evacuated people will be allowed back in the building.
