Russia Ready to Begin Flight Tests for Next Generation Aircraft Engine

Russian developers are ready to begin flight tests for the PD-14 next generation turbofan engine for passenger aircraft, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Monday.

GORKI (Sputnik) — The PD-14 engine has thrust of 14 tonnes, while new engine with a 15.6-tonne thrust will be created for MC-21 jets with capacity of 210 passengers, according to Rogozin.

The engines are developed by Aviadvigatel OJSC design bureau that specializes in developing of gas turbine engines for aviation.

"At the moment we are on the stage of state tests, and will soon move to the flight tests of the PD-14 engine," Rogozin said, adding that it is planned to equip Irkut MC-21 jet airliners with capacity of up to 180 passengers with the PD-14 engines beginning in 2017.
