Russian nationals were unhurt in floods that swept Nepal and left at least 13 persons dead and dozens of others missing, Russia’s embassy in the South Asian country said on Sunday.

“According to available data, there are no Russians among those killed or missing in the floods,” Alexei Yekin, an assistant to the Russian ambassador in Nepal, told RIA Novosti.

According to Nepal officials, three foreigners mentioned by the media as those missing in the floods were Ukrainian nationals, the diplomat said, adding that the embassy continued to closely monitor the natural disaster in Nepal.

The floods, triggered by landslides, swept the Rapti River in the popular Annapurna trekking region in the west of Nepal.

Around 50 people are also missing and three have been rescued, Nepalnews.com reported, adding the death toll was very likely to rise as rescuers searched the remote mountain area.

The floods tore through villages on the banks of the Seti, a main water source for the people in the region and popular rafting destination for tourists.

The floods have now reached the outskirts of the city of Pokhara, Nepal’s second largest city.

Four trucks, a tractor and a bus were also swept away, Nepalnews said.

The Nepal Army and Police are taking part in rescue efforts in the area. The local administration in the Kaski area has issued an alert asking people to move away from the river area.

Nepal often suffers floods due to intense rain in the monsoon season from May to September.
