Syria and Russia signed a cultural cooperation program for 2010-2012 in Damascus on Sunday.

Syria and Russia signed a cultural cooperation program for 2010-2012 in Damascus on Sunday.

The document signed by Russian Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev and his Syrian counterpart Riyad Naasan Agha is based on a basic intergovernmental agreement on cultural and scientific cooperation concluded between Moscow and Damascus in 1995.

The program, which is called upon to boost cultural exchanges, friendly relations and understanding between the two countries' peoples, also envisions Days of Russian Culture in Syria in 2011 and Days of Syrian Culture in Russia in 2012.

"We have a great cultural potential," Avdeyev said, adding that Syria can show Russia its folk bands and paintings, while Russia can show Syria its intellectual cinema and museums.

Riyad Agha in turn said the document's importance was defined by "firm historic relations of friendship" between the countries, adding that many Syrian managers graduated from Soviet or Russian universities.

Avdeyev said Russian higher educational establishments are ready to accept more students from Syria.

Over 40,000 graduates of Soviet and Russian universities live and work in Syria. Many of them hold leading positions in various spheres related to culture.
