MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - Over 200 troops and about 40 units of armaments and hardware are taking part in air defense exercises that began Monday in the Krasnodar Territory in southern Russia, a Ground Forces spokesman said.

Tactical exercises with live firing in Russia's southern town of Eisk are being held involving troops from the Moscow Military District.

"The exercises are aimed at checking the combat effectiveness of units and the ability of commanders to target fire under difficult aerial conditions. Live firing of Tunguska, Strela-10 air defense systems and Igla mobile air defense systems will be conducted during the exercises' final stage," Col. Igor Konashenkov said.

The exercises are being held as the conflict between Russia and Georgia over breakaway South Ossetia continues for a fourth day.

Russia says Georgian forces have killed around 2,000 South Ossetian civilians, mainly Russian nationals, since the start of the offensive against South Ossetia, and that 34,000 locals have been forced to flee to Russia. In response to the Georgian attacks, Russia sent tanks and troops into the province, and carried out a series of air strikes on Georgian military targets.
