President Xi: Unwrapping the Enigma of Chinese Dream

President Xi: unwrapping the enigma of Chinese dream

Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a landmark visit to the US aimed at diffusing tensions in bilateral relations and highlighting how the Chinese dream has succeeded in many areas where the American one hasn't.

It was reported that greeting his Chinese guest, President Obama raised a glass to the American and Chinese people using oriental-style metaphor: “May they work together like fingers on the same hand in friendship and peace”.

However, despite all signs of highest respect, rarely showed by his American hosts to the world leaders, including 21 gun salute, President Xi’s overseas trip by no means proved to be an easy road for him. The relations between two states are rocked by trade wars, spying in cyber space and increasing rivalry in the vast Asia-Pacific region.

However, during his visit to the US Chinese leader proved to be a master of soft-power diplomacy quoting Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt while  showing that Chinese dream can be no less attractive than American dream.

In his address to the United Nation President Xi explained what Chinese dream is about. Here is what he said: “The dream of the Chinese people is closely connected with the dreams of other peoples of the world. We cannot realize the Chinese dream without a peaceful international environment, a stable international order and the understanding, support and help from the rest of the world. The realization of the Chinese dream will bring more opportunities to other countries and contribute to global peace and development”.

Alexander Domrin, professor at the High School of Economics, who lectured in many American Universities (studio guest); Brian Young, independent expert, based in Hong Kong (studio guest) and Bryce Swerhun, PhD candidate at the City University of Hong Kong shared their views on the issue.
