The top diplomats of BRICS will hold meetings during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in New York, Sergei Lavrov said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Foreign ministers from BRICS countries will hold a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"For the last three or four years, documents that reinforce our common approach to key policy issues… are adopted at meetings of foreign ministers as well, the next one will take place in New York this month, in the framework of the UN General Assembly," Lavrov told students and faculty of Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

The 70th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters is scheduled to open on September 15. Russian President Vladimir Putin will lead the country's delegation to New York, comprising Sergei Lavrov, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Chairperson of the Council of the Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev among others.

BRICS is an association of five major developing economies, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, that represents almost three billion people and some 20 percent of the global GDP.
