Russia will consult the Iraqi authorities before putting forward the UN Security Council resolution concerning the use of chemical weapons by Islamic State (ISIL) militants, Russia’s envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said.

UNITED NATIONS, (Sputnik) — The ISIL militants, who are currently in control of vast territories in Syria and Iraq, have been increasingly using chemicals in attacks in on the occupied land.

"We need to go through a process involving the government of Iraq before that [resolution] happens," Churkin told journalists on Wednesday.

ISIL Uses Chemical Weapons in Attack on Northeast Syria
The advance of the extremist group both in Syria and Iraq is being countered by efforts by the countries' government forces, as well as Kurdish troops and a US-led international coalition.

Deputy of Kurdistan Alliance in the Iraqi parliament Zana Said has told Sputnik that ISIL repeatedly used chlorine gas in attacks on Iraqi northern Nineveh province and the western Iraq's Anbar province among other locations.

On Tuesday, ISIL reportedly used chemicals during an attack on the northeastern Syrian town of Marea for the second time.
