ISIL Militants Destroy Ancient Temple in Syrian Palmyra
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Locals informed the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Sunday that ISIL militants had attacked the UNESCO-listed Temple of Bel, which dates back to the Roman era, though there was no information on the extent of inflicted damage.

"UNOSAT satellite analysis confirms Temple of Bel, Palmyra, Syria, main building destroyed," the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNOSAT) tweeted.

This came after militants blew up last week the Temple of Baalshamin in Palmyra, seriously damaging it.

In May ISIL captured Palmyra, which contains large ruins of an ancient Roman city. Islamists have destroyed several heritage sites in territories under their control both in Syria and in Iraq, as part of their campaign to fight alleged false idols.
