MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Each working group dedicated to conflict resolution in Syria will consist in equal numbers of representatives of the government, the opposition and civil society, one of the Syrian opposition leaders, Qadri Jamil, told Sputnik Monday.
Four working groups are set to begin their work in September and conclude it by the UN Security Council-assigned deadline of November 15, Jamil said earlier on Monday.
"Each group will consist of 20-30 people. A third [of each group] will represent the current regime, a third — the opposition and a third – civil society," Jamil said.
The working groups are set to consider military, humanitarian and political issues in Syria, as well as future state-building. According to Jamil, each of the groups will address one of these issues.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting anti-government rebels and radical Islamists, including the Islamic State jihadist group and the Nusra Front. Over 250,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict, according to UN estimates.
In July, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that four working groups on Syrian reconciliation would commence work in September.
