The number of victims of a landslide caused by heavy rain in Guatemala’s Santa Catarina Pinula municipality has risen to 71, local elPeriodico newspaper reported, citing the rescue workers.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier, 26 people were reported dead. ITV said, citing local authorities and fire service representatives, that up to 600 people were missing after the landslide on Friday.

Dozens of homes in Santa Catarina Pinula were affected by the disaster, which occurred late on Thursday in a suburb located about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) east of Guatemala City, the country’s capital.

Nearly 1,800 people are involved in search and rescue operations, including Red Cross workers, police officers and rescue teams.

Rescue crews are now searching for victims using mechanical diggers and sniffer dogs.

Russia's Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov has offered Russian rescuers help to Guatemala.
