LUXEMBOURG (Sputnik) EU ministers for foreign and interior affairs will meet in early October to discuss the influx of refugees via the Balkan route, Chairman of the EU Foreign Affairs Council Jean Asselborn said Saturday.

"We are still in the process of organizing for October 5 or 6 a meeting of foreign and home affairs ministers on the Balkan route, so that together we can find solutions," Asselborn, who is Luxembourg's Foreign Affairs Minister, told reporters after an informal EU meeting on migrants in Luxembourg.

The majority of migrants coming to Europe through Western Balkans originate from Syria, Pakistan and Eritrea, countries hit by war, according to the Council’s chairman.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini confirmed that the 28-nation bloc’s next step to tackle the migrant crisis would be meeting in October. "But obviously we stand ready to have emergency meetings at any time," she noted.

Mogherini said EU ministers would address the root causes of surging migration flows, including the absence of a unity government in Libya and the pressing need for a political solution to the Syrian armed conflict.

The meeting will come in the steps of wider talks on the refugee crisis, scheduled for September 14 in Brussels, where EU interior ministers will discuss the issue of receiving and resettling migrants within the bloc.
