MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Riga’s decision to turn down Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency's application to register as a media outlet is discriminatory and politicized, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.
"We are calling on the international community and specialized organizations, first of all the OSCE [Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe] representative for media freedom, to assess this overtly discriminatory and politicized decision of the Latvian authorities," the ministry told RIA Novosti.
On Friday, Latvia turned down Rossiya Segodnya’s application. The country’s authorities later blamed their refusal on the errors in the application documents.
Latvian regulator spokeswoman Evija Ivdra told journalists later on Friday that Rossiya Segodnya had a month to appeal the rejection.
Latvia received Rossiya Segodnya’s application on April 29.
