Damascus and Kiev topped the list of cities that saw the steepest decline in liveability over the past five years, research by The Economist newspaper said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syria has been mired in a civil war over the past four years. Ukraine has seen mass riots that brought a nationalist government to power in a February 2014 coup, launching a military campaign against eastern Ukrainian independence militias within two months.

The Zimbabwe capital of Harare improved its liveability the most, the study showed.

The Economist ranking considered 30 factors, including security, level of health care, educational resources, infrastructure and the environment.

The average liveability in 140 cities in the world has declined by one percent since 2010, according to the report, and a two percent fall in safety and stability was shown worldwide.
