Nearly 650,000 Volkswagen Group cars sold in Italy have been equipped with manipulated software that downplayed emission results, the manufacturer said on its website Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Volkswagen Group, the total number of such vehicles amounted to over 648,000. Of the total number, 361,000 were Volkswagen vehicles and over 197,000 Audi cars. There were also more than 35,000 Seats and almost 39,000 Skodas.

Earlier in September, the US Environmental Protection Agency accused Volkswagen of defective software installed in the cars’ diesel engines providing false results on emission tests.

According to the Volkswagen estimate, some 11 million automobiles are affected worldwide.

Volkswagen has said it will set aside over $7 billion to cover the necessary service measures and perform public relations damage control for projected losses to its reputation.
