MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK border police spotted the migrant on Tuesday after he had almost succeeded in walking through the tunnel, according to the spokesman for the company operating train services between Britain and France via the Channel Tunnel.
"This type of criminal intrusion into the tunnel is extremely rare, as well as being both illegal and extremely dangerous. We are now investigating how he managed to evade all the different levels of security," the Eurotunnel spokesman was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
The migrant, described as a 40-year-old man, is facing charges of causing an obstruction to an engine or carriage on the railway. He has become the first migrant to have successfully walked through the almost 30-mile long tunnel, evading police and hundreds of surveillance cameras.
On Thursday, he was due to appear at Medway Magistrates' Court in Britain.
On Tuesday, when the incident took place, about 600 new attempts to enter the Channel Tunnel were made by undocumented immigrants from Calais, a major ferry port in northern France, according to a police source cited by the European Commission in a statement.
