WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Work and Kendall flew to visit the DIUx’s new office at Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, which is intended to serve as a catalyst to build new relationships and foster opportunities to benefit national security and industry, the release said.
“[Work and Kendall] met with the leadership of the Defense Department's Silicon Valley point of presence, the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx),” the Defense Department stated in a news release on Wednesday.
Work and Kendall held talks with DIUx Director George Duchak and his military deputy Rear Admiral Brian Hendrickson on technological superiority, emerging commercial technologies and integrating those ideas within military systems, the release noted.
Work stated the DIUx’s mission included strengthening and building relationships with Silicon Valley corporations and investigating breakthrough and emerging technologies, according to the release.
“DIUx leadership will serve as mediators between ideas and opportunities.”
They would aid innovators, who have not traditionally worked with the Defense Department to navigate the US defense system and enable the companies to “have an impact and help solve significant national security problems,” the release explained.
In July 2015, the Defense Department issued new guidance calling for a more concerted effort toward focusing on innovation in the commercial technology sector.
The DIUx will serve as the hub to increase the Defense Department's communication with and access to innovating, leading edge technologies from high-tech, start-up companies and entrepreneurs, the release concluded.
