The former chief commander of the Hamas’s military wing in the West Bank, Ibrahim Hamed, was given on Sunday 54 life sentences for organizing series of suicide terrorist attacks against Israelis that killed 46, injured over 400 people, Israeli media reported.

The Israeli Ofer Military court found Hamed,47, guilty of organizing several suicide attacks in Jerusalem, including bombings at a central square, a café, a shopping mall and a cafeteria at Hebrew University that killed a total of 46 people and injured over 400, according to the Israeli media.

Hamed, who headed Hamas's military wing in the West Bank, was arrested in 2006.

Hamas, a Palestinian militant group which controls the Gaza Strip, had unsuccessfully called for Hamed’s release in a prisoner swap in October 2011 in which captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was freed in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinians captured by Israel.

Over 7,000 Palestinians are believed to have been held in Israeli jails over armed attacks on Israeli troops and civilians. Most of them are members of Hamas and its rival faction Fatah ruling the West Bank.
