MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - A chief investigator, involved in the embezzlement case of a deputy finance minister, Sergei Storchak, handed in his resignation as head of the investigative team on Wednesday, but will remain part of the team.

Storchak's lawyer Alexander Petrov said earlier on Wednesday that Valery Khomitsky had been barred from the investigation. Storchak is accused of the attempted embezzlement of $43 million.

"Khomitsky has submitted his resignation as head of the investigative team and for the transfer of the Storchak case to another chief investigator... He will not be barred from the probe and has no plans to leave the investigative unit," said Vladimir Markin, official spokesman for the Investigation Committee of the Prosecutor General's Office.

The spokesman cited Khomitsky's heavy workload as a reason for the decision.

Markin dismissed allegations that Khomitsky's resignation was linked to the sacking on Monday of another investigator, Dmitry Dovgy.

Dovgy was sacked following a check into his activities, Markin said, adding that the inspections indicated that Dovgy had divulged confidential information and was negligent in carrying out his duties.

Dovgy said he would contest the decision in court.

A key figure in Russia's Paris Club debt talks, Storchak was detained in Moscow along with two businessmen on November 15. Russia's Investigation Committee said his arrest was related to the settlement of Soviet-era debts and that the measure was based on prosecutors' concerns that he could destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses. Stochak has maintained his innocence.
